The film/video production process at a glance:
To get the ball rolling, all we need is an idea of what you want to make and a rough idea of your budget. For this purpose, we may meet you in person, participate in a conference call or have a telephone conversation. It’s really your decision.
Based on this “Discovery Call”, we will then prepare a written proposal and a draft budget that will form the basis for production should you decide to commission Picture Lock Films to implement your project.
Typically, the film production process consists of four main phases, but differs slightly depending on whether we are working in live action or animation.
Live action film process
The process usually begins with a rough script with the content to be filmed. We never go anywhere or shoot anything that we haven’t discussed with you before filming begins.
Depending on the film, considerable logistics and planning effort is often required, e.g. B. identifying your filming locations, booking interviewees and any resources that may be required for the filming process.
We also take into account the time of year for indoor and outdoor locations, the time of day for filming and any external factors that might prevent us from filming; such as planned construction or ground maintenance work or even the great British weather!
Live Action: Filming
Filming days are the most expensive part of any production. Already in the planning phase, we figured out how we could best capture the required content. A good shoot should be well planned and structured to produce all the material needed for both the film and the editing process. Be it excerpts, general views (GVs) and a whole range of other shots and recording techniques that give your film a high-quality finish.
On location, we try to make the filming experience entertaining for everyone involved, but the process is often more time-consuming than many initially expect. Good content never happens by accident, but that’s what we do every day… so relax.
Live-Action: Editing (Post-Production)
Customers rarely see this part of the process, even though they are welcome to do so. The raw material (the “bulks”) is imported, logged, transcribed and edited. Graphics, including name tags and music, as well as voice-over if required, will be added.
However, before spending too much on the finishing touches, we always provide our customers with advance viewing copies to ensure the film meets all expectations. If it is more convenient for you, we can come to your office by arrangement to work with you on the finishing touches.
Animation production process
The animation planning process is more detailed as we first work on the script that we share with you to ensure we cover all the bases of your project. Once this is approved we will begin work on the storyboard stage. This will show you what each sequence will look like when we get to the final animation stage.
At the storyboard stage, it is best and most cost-effective to make major changes and additions at this point in the process. We never move on to animation unless you are completely happy with the storyboard.
Animation: Full animation
In the animation phase of production, we begin by animating all the images from the storyboard scenes to bring all the sequences to life.
Animation Sound Design/The Dub
This is the case when an animated film or in some cases a live action film is commissioned to dub in order to mix the sound or have the sound designed for certain scenes. This is especially important with animations to achieve a high-quality finish. Movies and animations are only sent to sync when they are “frame locked” – then no further image changes or editing are required.
permit
Before we deliver finished videos, digital media or animations, we always ensure that the customer is satisfied. We usually provide a link to a preview page where customers can watch their film/animation at their leisure.
