Gor Mahia boss explains how they outclassed APR in their CECAFA Kagame Cup opener

  • Gor Mahia set a disciplined, compact defensive trap to exploit APR’s key weakness.
  • A revised midfield structure provided the necessary composure and defensive solidity.
  • Although they were only in the second week of pre-season training after a slow start, the discipline and high level of fitness of the players exceeded expectations.

Kenyan giants Gor Mahia launched a stunning attack on the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup on Friday evening, defeating Rwandan champions APR FC 5-0 at a packed Amahoro Stadium.

The victory, witnessed by thousands of local fans and tournament patron Paul Kagame, was a masterclass for Gor after a slow start to pre-season.

After the game, K’Ogalo head coach Charles Akonnor spoke about the tactical plan that dismantled the hosts on their own turf.

After a defensive slump and a defeat in the first pre-season game, Akonnor and his technical bench spent the tournament opener preparations identifying structural deficiencies in the Rwandan team.

“We saw a few games that our opponents were playing and we realized what we can do to outdo them,” Akonnor revealed.

“We recognized their strengths and weaknesses and used it all to our advantage. Their weakness was switching, when they came forward and lost the ball they weren’t really organized.”

Instead of engaging in open combat away from home, Akonnor directed his troops to set a tactical trap. Gor Mahia adopted a disciplined, compact form and encouraged APR to surge forward before striking.

“Most of the time we waited and prepared the opponent. When we got possession of the ball, we were quick to attack. We knew that if we were strong at the back and good defensively, there would always be a chance for us to attack and get forward.”

The strategy paid off seamlessly. After absorbing the early pressure, Michael Kibwage opened the scoring in the 34th minute, converting a corner.

Just a minute later, Patrick Essombe doubled the lead with a spectacular long-range shot that left the hosts in the dust.

Second half goals from Paul Okoth Odhiambo, Lesley Otieno Owino and Ebenezer Assifuah-Inkoom rounded out the 5-0 win.

The focus of implementing this high-intensity counter-pressing system was a completely revised midfield structure.

The coach also explained his proactive management during the game, such as withdrawing midfielder Alpha Onyango to protect the team balance.

“Alpha did very well. We took him out because he had a yellow card, which wasn’t so good; if he had gone back in and made a mistake it would have affected us. However, I think our midfield structure was really good. They played exactly how we wanted them to and the composure with which they positioned themselves on the pitch was excellent.”

While the team is only in its second week of pre-season training, Akonnor admitted that his players’ fitness has exceeded his initial expectations but warned that the SportPesa League champions are still far from their peak.

“Their discipline exceeded our expectations in terms of the exercises we gave them and the way they had to train. They were much fitter than we expected. But honestly, we’re not at our peak yet.”

With three points and a massive goal difference of +5, Gor Mahia are firmly at the top of Group A and on course to qualify for the semi-finals.

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
