How does the UEFA Champions League play-off round work?
The winners of each tie advance to the league phase of the Champions League, while the defeated sides switch to the league phase of the UEFA Europa League.
Who are the 14 teams battling for the 2026/27 Champions League play-off spots, and how did they qualify?
The Champions Path features ten domestic league champions fighting for five league-phase spots, while the League Path features four high-ranking non-champions battling for the remaining two openings.
The Champions Path will be headlined by seeded giants such as Scotland’s Celtic FC and Croatia’s GNK Dinamo Zagreb.
Joining them are Austria’s LASK and Norway’s Viking FK, who both entered the tournament directly at this stage thanks to their strong country coefficient rankings.

The rest of the Champions Path field earned their places through gruelling summer qualifying rounds, including Slovakia’s SK Slovan Bratislava, Slovenia’s NK Celje, Bulgaria’s PFC Levski Sofia, Greece’s AEK Athens, Azerbaijan’s Sabah FK, and Israel’s defensive underdogs, Hapoel Beer-Sheva.
Meanwhile, the elite League Path consists of just four clubs competing for two highly coveted spots.
The headline matchup in this route features Turkey’s Fenerbahce SK taking on French powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais.

Fenerbahce vs Lyon prediction
One of the key matches to watch in this week’s play-offs will see Turkey’s Fenerbahçe SK host French powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais at the Şukru Saracoglu Stadium from 10pm EAT on Tuesday.
The headline League Path tie sees Fenerbahçe in great form, having shut out Sturm Graz 3–0 on aggregate.
Lyon had to fight back from a first-leg deficit against Sparta Praha, winning 3–0 at home to advance 4–2 on aggregate.
Fener’s rock-solid defence and that famous home atmosphere could give them an edge before the return leg in France.
Having last qualified in 2008 and 2019 respectively, Fenerbahçe and Lyon have a considerable appetite for Champions League football.
The two sides met four times in the competition’s main stage during the 2000s, with Lyon winning all four, but their most recent encounter was in the Europa League – a 0–0 league-phase draw in January 2025.
Lyon reached the semi-finals in their last Champions League participation in 2020, losing to eventual winners Bayern Munchen.
GNK Dinamo vs Viking prediction
Croatia’s GNK Dinamo Zagreb welcomes Norway’s Viking FK to the Maksimir Stadium for an intriguing Champions Path battle on Tuesday.
Dinamo cruised into this round with a dominant 7–1 aggregate win over Kauno Zalgiris.
Viking enter directly as a seeded team thanks to their coefficient, meaning they are rested but might be rusty against a sharp Dinamo side on their own turf.
Edging Bodo/Glimt to seal their first Norwegian title in 34 years was a real feather in Viking’s cap.
A return to this competition will be particularly poignant for joint-coach Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim, who spent more than a decade at the club as a player, having debuted in 1994 – two years after their 1–0 aggregate defeat to Barcelona in their last tie in this competition.
Levski Sofia vs AEK Athens prediction
Bulgaria’s PFC Levski Sofia faces Greece’s AEK Athens in a highly competitive Balkan derby in the Champions Path on Tuesday night.
Levski advanced with two clean sheets, beating Kairat Almaty 2–0 on aggregate.
AEK enter directly at this stage, so they are fresh but untested. Levski’s defence will face a stern examination from an elite Greek attack looking for that crucial away goal.
Celtic vs LASK prediction
Scottish champions Celtic FC play host to Austria’s LASK at a packed Celtic Park in the Champions Path on Wednesday night from 10PM EAT.
Both sides received direct entry to the play-offs via coefficients, making this their first European match of the season.
Celtic will lean on the iconic Celtic Park roar to build a lead, while LASK will likely sit deep and keep things tight ahead of the return leg in Austria.
Celtic have failed to come through qualifying in their last five attempts – their most recent play-off success was an 8–4 aggregate victory over Astana in 2017/18.
N.E.C. vs Bodo/Glimt prediction
Dutch side N.E.C. Nijmegen takes on Norway’s FK Bodo/Glimt at the Goffertstadion in a League Path encounter that promises plenty of goals on Wednesday.
N.E.C. advanced in dramatic fashion after edging out Greek giants Olympiacos 2–1 in extra time during the third round.
Bodo/Glimt survived a wild, high-scoring 6–5 aggregate thriller against Belgium’s Union Saint-Gilloise.
Bodo/Glimt recorded wins against Manchester City, Atletico de Madrid, Inter (twice), and Sporting CP in last season’s Champions League.
Hapoel Beer-Sheva vs Sabah prediction
Israel’s Hapoel Beer-Sheva welcomes Azerbaijan’s Sabah FK to the Turner Stadium for the Champions Path first leg on Wednesday.
Beer-Sheva pulled off the biggest shock of the tournament so far by knocking out regular group-stage participants Crvena zvezda 3–0 on aggregate.
Sabah FK earned their place by comfortably routing Danish club Aarhus 5–2 on aggregate.
Sabah are bidding to become only the second club from Azerbaijan to reach a Champions League group stage/league phase after Qarabağ (2017/18, 2025/26).
Slovan Bratislava vs Celje prediction
Slovakia’s SK Slovan Bratislava plays Slovenia’s NK Celje at the Tehelne pole to round out the Champions Path fixtures on Wednesday night.
Slovan Bratislava booked their place with a highly convincing 4–1 aggregate triumph over Sweden’s Mjallby.
NK Celje pulled off a gritty comeback, overturning a first-leg deficit to eliminate Ararat-Armenia 3–2 on aggregate.
Slovan Bratislava enters the contest as the favourite on their home turf, but Celje have already demonstrated the resilience to fight back when trailing.
